Stop the Robb Drive Truck Stop Did you know that Flying J wants to build a big truck stop at the corner of Robb Drive and Interstate 80 in Northwest Reno? This website was created as a means to communicate with concerned citizens about the truck stop issue and how they can get involved. Note: In 2008, the proposal for a truck stop was defeated -- for now -- due to the actions of area residents. However, constant vigilance by residents is needed to control any unwanted commercial development that may negatively impact the neighborhood. MEETINGS & NEWS December 23, 2008 - Flying J Files for Bankruptcy. Click here to read article. Also, you may want to check out the Flying J Watch site in the Resources/Links section below for recent stories about other Flying J locations. June 30, 2008 - No appeal filed by Flying J ... yet. - According to Councilman Aiazzi, the City Clerk's Office has reported that, as of 5 pm on June 30, Flying J had not filed an appeal to the denial of their proposal by the Planning Commission on June 18. The deadline for filing the appeal was June 30. Whether the matter will come before the Council again is uncertain. In a note to this site, Councilman Aiazzi said, "Thank you all for your e-mails and your efforts in working to keep your neighborhood the way you want it to be. A special thanks goes to the Neighborhood Advisory Board." You may want to contact the Council to thank them for their consideration in this matter. A report about the June 18 Planning Commission meeting is now available in the Resources/Links section below, or click here to see the report. Upcoming Meetings: Regular monthly Northwest Neighborhood Advisory Board (NAB) meetings are held the 3rd Thursday of the month at 6 pm at the Fire Station on Mae Anne at Sharlands. The truck stop issue may or may not be part of the agenda at some of these meetings, but residents may want to attend to express their views on the issue. More signs available now! If you'd like a yard sign to post in your area, or to get on our email list, please email us at NoTruckStopReno@yahoo.com. Also, signs may be available at future NW NAB meetings. NW Reno Earthquakes and Fires - Hundreds of earthquakes, ranging up to 4.7 in magnitude, with an epicenter located between Mogul and Somersett (just one exit away from the Robb Drive interchange!), have shaken NW Reno during the past several weeks, and the US Geological Survey says more and stronger quakes may follow in the near future. The proposed Flying J Truck Stop location lies just above the water treatment plant and the Truckee River. Earthquakes can cause fuel tanks to leak into the water supply. Flying J has a history of leaking fuel into streams, rivers and ground water in other states, and in fact they have been fined for tampering with or disabling underground leak detectors in California. The recent earthquake in Wells, Nevada caused the Flying J Truck Stop there to be evacuated due to a propane leak! (See the Resources/Links section below.) Also, last year, a wild fire broke out near the exact location where Flying J wants to build their truck stop, and wild fires have been a frequent occurrence in the NW Reno and Peavine areas. Do you really want huge diesel, gasoline and propane storage tanks to be installed in an area that is prone to fires and earthquakes? KRNV Exposes Environmental Infractions - On April 3rd, Joe Hart of Channel 4 did an excellent report on the 5:00 news about multiple serious environmental infractions by Flying J in California. You can view the video at www.KRNV.com. Look for the video titled "Joe Hart Uncovers New Information." Check out the new articles, documents and video in Resources/Links below. THE PROBLEM STOP the proposed Flying J Truck Stop scheduled to be built at Robb Drive and I-80 in Northwest Reno! STOP the gridlock traffic that will be caused by trucks clogging the Robb Dr. exits in both directions! Imagine the traffic on the Robb Dr. overpass as hundreds of slow-moving trucks are making left turns in and out of a truck stop. Imagine the nightmare this will create for residents who depend on this exit and bridge to get to and from work. Since the proposed location is just above the water treatment plant and the Truckee River, fuel leaks could easily pollute our water supply. And exhaust from idling trucks would contribute to air pollution in our area. Truck stops are known to attract drug dealers, prostitutes and other crime. Why would we want this type of business near our residential neighborhoods, churches and schools? YOU CAN HELP Get on our email list now!
